我国古代“五行”说所谓水、火、金、木、土五者互相克制。其顺序是：水克火，火克金，金克木，木克土，土克水。
隋 萧吉 《五行大义·论相尅》：“尅者，制罚为义，以其力强能制弱，故木尅土，土尅水，水尅火，火尅金，金尅木。”亦称“ 五行相胜 ”。参见“ 五行相生 ”。
五行相克，指的是事物的相互克制、制约或抑制的关系，如木克土，土克水，水克火，火克金，金克木。五行在中医理论中是指构成天地万物的五种基本物质，用以说明世界万物的起源和世界是物质多样性的统一体。五行中每一“ 行”都有“克我”、“我克”的关系。五行作为古代汉族人民朴素的辨证唯物的哲学思想。多用于哲学、中医学和占卜方面。五行学说是汉族文化重要组成部分。
